PURPOSE STATEMENT

Money can stretch further than my two hands.

My purpose in life is to acquire enough capital where I can live a comfortable lifestyle while being able to help as many people as possible. I believe that there are two ways to help others; through your human resources or through your financial resources. I am a very practical person, and drawing from my small understanding of social reproduction theory, assisting others through financial resources may actually be the most effective way to help. Furthermore, financial assistance may not only be the most effective way to help others, but the most efficient way as well. Money would give me the ability to help more people in more places simultaneously. It is not impossible to help others without large amounts of money, but money makes the process much easier to accomplish.

HOW I HAVE GROWN FROM MY NEW EXPERIENCES

SKILL 1: CONFLICT RESOLUTION

While working at the College Access Center, I predominantly worked in a team setting. As everyone knows, teamwork can easily increase creativity but also increase conflict. For one specific team project, there was a slight disconnect in communication between team members which resulted in a conflict that impeded the progress we were making on our project. Being able to identify this breakdown in communication, I took it upon myself to resolve this conflict. It was not an easy task, and it required me to get all team members on board with a specific vision for our project. Thankfully, my intervention helped us reach the necessary deadline, and this experienced helped me developed my conflict resolution skills.

SKILL 2: PROGRAM MANGEMENT

At the College Access Center, there is a great program call “Roadmaps”. The College Access Center offers this program year round, and its primary objective is to expose high school aged students to the idea of higher level education. This program offers college tours and guidance thinking about what to study in college and various workshops for personal development to get ready for college. During the summer, I was given the responsibility of creating and facilitating one of these personal development workshops. This was a great opportunity to share my experience with future college students. However, my initial enthusiasm was curved by how complicated it was to take complete charge of a workshop. I had no idea of the amount of planning and preparation that went into workshop management. I had to draw from numerous resources in order to successful prep for the workshop. I utilized everything at my disposal to prepare my workshop, from Google to my supervisor. After the preparation aspect of the workshop was completed, I was faced with a new set of challenges. I had never facilitated a workshop or done anything of that nature, and there were few resources that could properly prepare me for the anxiety that comes with running a workshop. I was given no choice but to constantly undergo a trial and error process while presenting my workshop. I started out a little rough, but my students were very understanding, and towards the end of my workshop I felt enormously more confident in my skills.

SKILL 3: TEAMWORK

The Center has been an experience that will have a great impact on my life. One of the greatest impacts will come in the shape of my new appreciation for teamwork. Prior to this experience, I always prefered to work on all my projects as an individual. I did not have the necessary communication and interpersonal skills necessary to successfully function within a team setting. Thanks to my experience at the Center, I have developed both these skills and now I can better thrive in team settings. Although the work was mainly fun, there were very stressful periods filled with important work. I tried to take on as much as I could on my own but it became evident that it simply could not be done. This forced me to become more dependent upon my co-intern. At first, I did not like the idea, but after some time we were able to become a very effective team. We were able to complete tasks more efficiently while lowering the overall amount of stress we experienced. On my final day as we concluded the internship,  I was filled with a new appreciation for the benefits of teamwork.
